TRIP TO PANNONHALMA

Pannonhalma Archabbey was founded as the first Hungarian Benedictine monastery in 996 by Prince Géza, who designated this as a place for the monks to settle, and then it soon became the center of the Benedictine order. The patron saint of the abbey, Saint Martin of Tours is believed to have been born at the foot of this hill. The monastery was built in honor of Saint Martin of Tours. Géza's son, King Stephen I donated estates and privileges to the monastery. Astrik (Anastasius) served as its first abbot.

The church is a rare outstanding

example of Romanesque style in Hungary. The oldest surviving document to use the Hungarian language, the Charter of the Tihany Benedictine Abbey, dating back to 1055, is still preserved in the monumental library, and furthermore there are about 360,000 other volumes, codexes and charters kept well. The Roman Catholic Church of Lébény near Győr was lucky to survive the Mongol and Turkish invasions, and today stands much like it did in the 13th century. In 1486 the abbey was reconstructed under King Matthias in the Gothic style. The monastery became an arch abbey in 1541, and as a result of Ottoman incursions into Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries it was fortified.. In the 17th and 18th centuries, rich Baroque adornments and extensions were added to the complex and much of its current facade dates from this time.

During the tour we will show a short film, where visitors can get an insight into the life of the Benedictine community, then we will continue in to the basilica, the crypt, the cloisters and the library.

The tour includes a lunch and a visit to the viewpoint of Boldog Mór, the Millennium Monument, the Assumption Chapel. Tour ends at the winery and the HEFTER glass gallery which ist the only gallery in Hungary dedicated to fields of art related to glass.
